Safety Auditing Course

Institution of Occupational Safety and Health Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment International Institute of Risk and Safety Management

Overview
This one day course is designed to provide personnel selected as internal auditors or with an interest in internal auditing, with the basic skills and latest knowledge to undertake a straightforward internal audit of a Health, Safety &/or Fire Management System.

This session is designed to provide personnel selected as internal auditors with the basic skills and knowledge to undertake a simple internal audit of a Health, Safety &/or Fire Management System. This course will concentrate on providing an integrated approach to those topics that are most fundamental to auditing of the Health, Safety & Fire Management System. The principal methods used will be information on a topic being provided by the presenter, accompanied by a group discussion intended to enable attendees to identify how that topic may impact upon their organisation.

The latter half of the day is given over to two Group exercises designed to provide attendees with practical involvement in producing an audit plan and then undertaking a simple audit with the presenter acting in a facilitator role. Whilst the underlying background requirement for auditing is inevitably drawn from various UK legislation, there will be NO bland regurgitation of the legislation; nor even the relevant Standards - any reference to legislation or Standards will be solely to provide the basis for auditing or to explain a specific aspect of the audit process.

This day session concentrates on the “How” of auditing rather than the creation of an auditable system. This course considers the following principal Standards relevant to auditing, & their requirements:-
BS EN ISO 17021 – Certification of Management Systems
BS EN ISO 19011 – Guidelines for Auditing Management Systems
BS OHSAS 18001 – Requirements for an Occ Health & Safety management System

The underlying legislation used to provide the references for the selection of audit topics and performance indicators is:- HSW Act and the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations Fire Safety Order 2005 This interactive course is intended to provide managers & supervisors with sufficient awareness of the principles of Performance Indicators and Auditing issues to be capable of simple audits and be more aware of how they might manage them.
