This study explores how ISO 45001 improves occupational health and safety in manufacturing industries, particularly in high-risk environments where workers face hazards from machinery, chemicals, noise, manual handling, and complex production systems. The paper finds that ISO 45001 provides a structured and preventive framework for identifying hazards, assessing risks, strengthening worker participation, and embedding continuous improvement into safety management. It is grounded in the reality that manufacturing environments are often hazardous due to heavy machinery, dangerous chemicals, noise exposure, manual handling tasks, and complex operating procedures.

The authors aim to understand how ISO 45001 supports hazard identification, risk control, accident prevention, employee engagement, and safety performance improvement.

The paper also places ISO 45001 within the broader evolution of occupational health and safety, showing how industries are moving from reactive safety systems to more proactive and systematic management approaches.

Methodology

The study adopts a descriptive and comparative research design.

Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews with safety officers, supervisors, and employees working in selected manufacturing units.

The total sample size was 120 employees, with 60 drawn from ISO 45001-certified manufacturing units and 60 from non-certified units.

Purposive sampling was used to select workers from medium- and large-scale manufacturing plants in India that were exposed to operational risks.

The analysis compared certified and non-certified units using safety indicators such as accident reduction, near-miss reporting, safety compliance, employee safety awareness, confidence in safety measures, participation in safety committees, training adequacy, and satisfaction with safety policies.

Key Findings

1. Better Safety Performance in ISO 45001-Certified Units

The study found that ISO 45001-certified manufacturing units performed better across every measured safety indicator.

Accident reduction was reported at 85% in certified units versus 60% in non-certified units.

Near-miss reporting reached 90% in certified units compared with 55% in non-certified units.

Safety compliance stood at 88% in certified units, while non-certified units recorded 62%.

Employee safety awareness was 92% in certified units compared with 65% in non-certified ones.

These results indicate that ISO 45001 supports stronger accident prevention, more active reporting, and better overall safety awareness.

2. Stronger Worker Confidence and Engagement

Employees in ISO 45001-certified units reported greater trust in the safety systems around them.

Confidence in safety measures was 89% in certified units compared with 63% in non-certified units.

Participation in safety committees was also much higher at 80% versus 40%.

Training adequacy was rated at 87% in certified units compared with 50% in non-certified units, while satisfaction with safety policies reached 85% versus 55%.

These findings suggest that ISO 45001 helps create a workplace where employees feel more involved, informed, and supported.

3. Proactive Hazard Identification and Risk Management

The paper highlights that ISO 45001 promotes a structured and proactive approach to hazard identification and risk assessment.

Manufacturing organizations are encouraged to identify physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards before incidents occur.

4. Leadership Commitment and Worker Participation Matter

Workers, in turn, are encouraged to report unsafe conditions, join safety committees, and contribute to decision-making around safety practices.

This combination of leadership and participation is shown to strengthen organizational safety culture.

5. Continuous Improvement Supports Long-Term Safety Gains

ISO 45001 is built around the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, which helps organizations review and improve their health and safety systems over time.

The study shows that documentation, audits, incident records, training programmes, and safety reviews all support better monitoring and sustained progress.

As a result, organizations can improve compliance, reduce incidents, and maintain long-term safety performance rather than relying on one-off safety actions.
